Two suspects who attempted to shoot a New Westminster police officer last week have been arrested.

A Lower Mainland-wide police pursuit began on May 18 when an officer, responding to reports of a couple sleeping in a car parked in a private parkade at First Street and Royal Avenue, was threatened at gunpoint.

The suspects managed to flee the scene and, despite being pursued by police in New Westminster and departments in Burnaby and Vancouver, escaped.

The two suspects, whose abandoned car was found in Vancouver later the same day, were eventually identified following a thorough investigation by local police. Their information was shared with police agencies across the country, and on Sunday, March 24, the pair was arrested without incident in Camrose, Alta.

“This is not only a great example of the professional response from our front-line officers, but also a testament of the dedication and excellent work of our major crime investigators,” Chief Const. Dave Jones said in a media release.

Charges are pending at this time. Police are expected to release more information, including identity, once the pair is officially charged.
