Sushi Well bids farewell after 15 years in New West

One last day to order pink rice, angry jalapenos and sunshine rolls before this local uptown eatery closes down on Dec. 31

Sushi Well will re-open as soon as they are able to find a new space.

For Sushi Well, the longstanding restaurant in New West’s uptown neighbourhood, the last day of the year will also mean the end of an era.

After 15 years of serving New West residents their award-winning sushi, the restaurant is bidding adieu to its current location, and looking eagerly for a new space to move in.

The Sushi Well team recently announced the news on their Facebook page, saying “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closing of our beloved restaurant.”

“After 15 wonderful years of serving you delicious food and creating memories in our beloved New Westminster, we have received notice that our building will be demolished starting January 2023.”

A new 29-storey high-rise is planned in the space instead, as mentioned on the website of PC Urban, the real estate development company that has undertaken the project.

“We will be open for business as usual until December 31st, at which point we will close our doors for the final time. Please come by and join us for one last meal before we say goodbye,” the post read.

Which means this is the last chance for New West residents to sit down for an elaborate Sushi Well "Special Meal" complete with rolls, chicken karaage, ngiris, sashimis, udon soup and their hot-and-cold ice cream tempura.

The restaurant’s fans took to social media site to express their disappointment — noting that they would miss the eatery’s “friendly service” and “quality food.”

Sushi Well, which was awarded the “Best Sushi” in the city back in 2013, is home to the “pink rice,” which, as per their website, was created by the founders Ian and Jenny as a more vitamin-rich alternative to the classic white rice.

The restaurant hopes to be able to offer all of it again soon, as its team confirmed — in response to a fan’s comment on Facebook — that it would re-open “as soon as space becomes available.”

“Thank you for your understanding, and please know that we will always cherish the time we spent with you at our restaurant.”

Sushi Well is located at 620 Sixth St.
