Grade 5 students at Herbert Spencer Elementary are doing their bit to give back to the community.

On Dec. 9, teacher Kim Thomas emailed The Record to say the students collected 1,451 healthy food items and raised $400, which they gave to the New Westminster Food Bank that morning.

"The Grade 5 students worked extremely hard to make this happen," writes Thomas. "It sure feels great to help people in our community during the holiday season."

The students surpassed their goal of 1,000 items by almost 50 per cent and doubled their monetary contribution in two days, after reporting $200 raised as of Wednesday morning.

The money is important because food bank staff can purchase $3 worth of food for every dollar contributed.
