The 16-year-old New Westminster teen accused of killing Karim Meskine in December 2013 was in court on Thursday to set a trial date.

There is still no trial date for a New Westminster teen accused of killing a 20-year-old Surrey man more than one year ago.

The teen appeared in New Westminster Supreme Court via videoconference from the Burnaby Youth Custody Services Centre on Thursday afternoon. The accused (whose name cannot be released because he is a young offender) has been in court several times in the past six months to set a date and each time the decision has been postponed to a later date.

The 16-year-old is facing one of count second-degree murder after he allegedly attacked Karim Meskine near the 22nd Street SkyTrain station on Dec. 17, 2013. Meskine never recovered from the injuries and was taken off life-support a few days later.

During the Feb. 12 appearance, the New Westminster teen’s defence attorney Gloria Ng asked the judge to postpone fixing a date until Mar. 26, citing she and Crown counsel were working towards a resolution. The additional time would allow the discussions to continue, Ng added.

Crown counsel did not object to the request but did admit it was prepared to set a date for the 16-year-old’s trial.

The presiding judge approved Ng’s request.

The New Westminster teen will return to Supreme Court via videoconference on Mar. 26 to fix a date for his trial.
