Snow day! New Westminster schools closed for 'extreme winter weather'

Schools expected to reopen Friday for staff and the limited number of students attending this week. A full return to classrooms for all students is set for Monday, Jan. 10.
New Westminster snow day Jan 6
More snow hit New Westminster as part of the winter storm over Metro Vancouver last night, and schools in New West are closed today.

New Westminster schools are closed today in the face of the winter storm that hit Metro Vancouver overnight.

With new snowfall that's heavy in places, combined with freezing rain, School District 40 is keeping its schools closed today. Most students are not in school this week, since the regular start of the new term was pushed back to Jan. 10 in the face of the Omicron wave. But a limited number of students – including those who need particular supports and those whose parents are essential health-care workers – have been in classrooms this week.

"Due to the extreme winter weather conditions and overnight accumulation affecting the areas around our schools and the routes to them, all New Westminster Schools are closed today, to keep both staff and students as safe as possible," the district announced early this morning.

The district anticipates that schools will reopen tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 7) for staff and the limited number of students attending this week.

Regular classes resume for all students on Monday.
