City to look at parking lot issues

The City of New Westminster is asking that Army & Navy do something about its Front Street walkway.

Catalin Dobrescue, a utilities engineer with the city, recently told the Downtown New Westminster Parking Commission that the city has received many complaints that the parkade detracts from the new Westminster Pier Park. The committee discussed options for beautifying the parkade, such as improved lighting.

Staff will be reporting back to council about other potential beautification measures that could be taken on the parkade. In addition, the committee recommended that council send a letter to Army & Navy and request that its walkway to the parkade either be maintained to improve its appearance or removed. Council approved the recommendation.

HUB OF ACTIVITY

Lord Kelvin Elementary School hopes to become a neighbourood hub.

The school is applying for funds under the School Community Connections program to provide a variety of needs, such as community school programs, settlement services, and a New Westminster Family Place drop-in in a vacant portable. The school is requesting $17,500 to renovate the portable for the proposed used.

Council endorsed the application for funding to complete the required renovation to the portable.
