The City of New Westminster is excited about a visit from an old friend.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Moriguchi City and New Westminster.

"The relationship has brought a fantastic richness of mutual friendship and cultural exchange," said Moriguchi section chief Kazuya Onishi in a letter to the city.

Rick Page, the city's director of legislative services, said Moriguchi is planning to send a delegation of 13 city councillors and 35 citizens to New Westminster to commemorate the anniversary of the relationship that began in 1963.

"We have asked that they come during the Hyack Festival," he said. "We feel that is when our city really shines the best."

Page said city officials are very excited about the visit by a friendship delegation from Moriguchi City.

"They have saved up for quite some time to be able to make this journey," he said.

New Westminster became the first city in Canada to have a sister city in Japan when it commenced the sister city relationship with Moriguchi.
