A New Westminster resident just got a $2,500 boost to help her trades education at BCIT.

Karli Copeland is among four recipients of Metal Supermarkets’ inaugural Trade School Scholarship, the company announced in a recent press release.

Copeland is originally from Burnaby and grew up in Coquitlam, graduating from Centennial Secondary School in Coquitlam.

She has always had a passion for metalworking and wanted to pursue welding and fabrication after high school — but, as the release notes, she was discouraged by the stigma of it being a “man’s job.”

After hearing about the Trades Discovery for Women program at BCIT, she decided to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a metal fabricator. This scholarship will help her continue her education at BCIT en route to pursuing that career dream.

Stephen Schober, president and CEO of Metal Supermarkets, said the company — an international metal supplier — wants to help address the demand of skilled trades workers.

“Our goal in recent years has been to inform students of the many benefits of investing in a trade career, and our scholarship was created to help support those who are entering this lucrative and highly rewarding career path,” Schober said. “Karli has demonstrated strong academic performance and commitment to her chosen field. Metal Supermarkets is proud to support her continued education.”

The scholarship is available to students who are beginning or continuing post-secondary education in the skilled trades.
