Newcomers and old-timers joined together in a celebration of community on Saturday afternoon.

Residents of the 500-block of Fader, Kelly and Garrett streets held a block party on Sept. 7. The afternoon's fun included a barbecue, games and crafts.

"I have been living here for 35 years," said Sapperton resident Barbara Zapf. "This is our first block party."

The block party included a performance by a local band, kids' activities, a balloon toss and hockey games. Residents gathered on Fader Street, which was closed to traffic during the event.

"It's just to get to know our neighbours," Zapf said. "In the last few years, a lot of young

people have moved into the neighbourhood."

The block party was one of more than 60 local projects that received funding from the Vancouver Foundation through its neighbourhood small grants program. The program, administered locally by Family Services of Greater Vancouver, helped residents organize a variety of events including block parties, cleanup events, sports activities, festivals, workshops, arts events and community gardens.
