B.C.'s workplace safety watchdog has handed over a five-figure penalty to a roofing company that was working on a New Westminster home project this past summer.

Helios Roofing and Waterproofing Ltd. was fined a total of $16,991.12 for exposing its workers to a two-storey fall.

WorkSafeBC said two employees and a supervisor were seen by working on the steep slope roof of a local housing construction site with no form of protection in place.

An inspection found the workers were at risk of falling from 16 feet above the ground — a "high-risk violation," WorkSafeBC explained.

It noted Helios also didn't ensure the ladders used on site were extended beyond the height of the upper landing or if they were safely secured.

"In addition, the firm failed to provide its workers with the information, instruction, training, and supervision necessary to ensure their health and safety," WorkSafeBC added.

"These were all repeated violations."

Helios, a Burnaby-based firm, was issued the fine on Aug. 17, 2023.
