Students at Richard McBride Elementary donated $597 to Honour House as part of their annual penny drive fundraising campaign.

The donation represents some of the money raised at the school from September 2010 to May 2011.

Each year, the students hold a penny drive, which begins in September when a bucket is placed in each classroom. The students fill the buckets with coins and at the end of each month, the buckets are weighed and the class which has brought in the most coins wins a small prize.

The penny drive continues until the end of May and the buckets are weighed one last time, with the class which has the heaviest bucket winning a pizza lunch.

The "Penny in a Pot" campaign organized by the New Westminster Lion's Club inspired the students to fundraise in a different direction this year, with half of the 2010/11 penny drive proceeds going to Honour House.

Honour House is a home away from home for Canadian Forces members, first responders and their families while they are receiving medical treatment in the Metro Vancouver area. It opened earlier this year at 509 St. George St.
