Respite Hotel offers break for caregivers

Community members are choosing to live at home longer and this can create challenges for family members who sometimes require a break from their caregiver role.

Community members are choosing to live at home longer and this can create challenges for family members who sometimes require a break from their caregiver role. Fraser Health has developed a Respite Hotel to reduce the potential for admission into acute care and to provide relief for caregivers in as timely a manner as possible.

The Respite Hotel places an emphasis on customer service, just like a real hotel.

Clients are referred to as guests and they will "check in" for a stay rather than be "admitted."

According to Fraser Health, the model allows for more flexibility than the traditional respite model, with no minimum stay and a significantly reduced pre-booking period.

The eight-room Respite Hotel is located on the third floor of Queen's Park Care Centre in New Westminster.

The hotel will provide a home away from home for community clients whose family caregivers require a break from their caregiver role. The Respite Hotel offers flexibility, with no minimum stay and a shorter pre-booking period, and regional access, so individuals known to Home Health from anywhere within Fraser Health can book a room. The short-stay service supports guests who would typically register for stays of one to two weeks.

By supporting caregivers, so they can continue to provide care for a family member who is able to remain at home rather than go into residential care.

The Respite Hotel features private guest bedrooms, quiet sitting areas and a private dining room. The bedrooms feature wall-mounted televisions, light oak armoires with matching beds, night stands and over-bed tables. Guests with physical needs have ready access to a call-bell system and ceiling lifts.

A wide variety of social and recreational activities are available on the second floor of Queen's Park Care Centre, or guests can enjoy individual activities within the Respite Hotel.

To book a room at the Respite Hotel, guests or caregivers should contact their local Home Health office.
