Film lovers, you can help make a new film festival a success right here in New Westminster.

There's a fundraiser tonight (Wednesday, Sept. 28) at the Heritage Grill, 477 Columbia St., from 6 to 10 p.m., for the new New West DocFest.

Everyone's invited to bring a friend and join in for food, drinks, a silent auction and music.

Tickets are $20, available online or at the door.

The New West DocFest is coming Oct. 21 and 22 to Douglas College. It features films with a green bent from around the world, as well as student films from the local film school Pull Focus.

There will be an opening reception at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, with the festival ongoing from noon to 9: 30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. The festival will feature film screenings as well as question-andanswer sessions.

There will be information displays in the foyer and a chance to check out an art exhibit by the Institute of Urban Ecology in the gallery. Seniors and students pay $5 per film, adults $7, or you can buy a pass for the festival for $20. See www.newwestdoc fest.ca for all the details.

RING THE BELL

Are there any wannabe handbell players out there?

A youth handbell choir and an adult handbell choir at Queens Avenue United Church are still looking for new members.

Basic music reading ability is required. If you're interested, call 604597-3894.

ART ABOUNDS

'Tis the season for art lovers.

You may recall that, in my last column, I brought you a few details about an upcoming art show at Dunwood Place. I've since received some more information, so thought I'd bring you up to date.

The art show in question is being hosted by Dunwood Place in its 11thfloor lounge on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The art show is helping to showcase Dunwood Place, which is a seniors' complex run by the Presbyterian Church that includes some subsidized housing.

The Dunwood Place Artists and Friends' group that's putting on the show includes 16 artists altogether - some of whom live at Dunwood. Some of the artists involved are members of New West Artists (www.newwest artists.com), and some are members of My Artists' Corner, or MAC (www. myartistscorner.ca).

The show will give people a chance to check out the art and also take a look at Dunwood Place, which is at 901 Colborne St. (behind the Safeway at McBride Boulevard and Eighth Avenue).

So why not pop in? You can check out the art and enjoy the view of the gardens while you're there.

POETRY GATHERING

Poetry lovers, mark Oct. 28 on your calendars.

That's the next World Poetry Night Out, in the auditorium at the New Westminster Public Library starting at 6: 30 p.m.

The evening will be hosted by Ariadne Sawyer and Anita Aguirre Nieveras, featuring the new World Poetry Ambassadors, Jemma Downes and Selene Bertelsen.

Also featured will be Tony Antonias, Jacqueline Maire, Alan Hill and Joe Ruggier.

There's also an open mike session where everyone can share a one-page poem -sign up for that at 6: 20 p.m. As always, the night includes a free raffle and refreshments. For details, call 604-526-4729 or see www.worldpoetry.ca.

PLAN AHEAD

Artists, take note: Place des Arts is currently accepting proposals for its 2013 gallery exhibitions (yes, you read that right, I said 2013).

The deadline for submissions is Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, so you still have plenty of time. Check out www.placedesarts.ca to download an exhibition proposal package, or call Michelle Chan at 604664-1636, ext. 32 or email [email protected].
