Queen Elizabeth Elementary School parents are holding a Halloween fundraiser to raise money for playground improvements.
Tracie Berg is one of the organizers of a fundraiser that's taking place on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Frankie G's Pub in Queensborough starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and include a beverage and a raffle ticket, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the playground.
"This fundraiser is being held to raise money for a desperately needed playground for our school, Queen Elizabeth Elementary," Berg wrote in an email to The Record.
"Our kindergarten and Grade 1s have an existing playground, but our grades 2, 3 and 4 have nothing but a gravel pit to play on."
Berg and Jaime Harrison teamed up on a fundraiser two years ago to buy new computers for the school, and have now turned their attention to the playground. People attending Saturday's fundraiser can come as they are or get dressed up, as there will be prizes for best costumes.
Tickets are available at the door, or by emailing Berg at whatsupstand@ hotmail.com or calling/ texting 604-626-5725 or emailing Harrison at jai [email protected] or calling/ texting 604-440-9985.
Heritage award
The Maria Keary Cottage has earned an award from Heritage B.C.
The project saw twin cottages on Carnarvon Street joined into one, and a two-storey addition built at the rear. The project included a major restoration of the cottages that had originally been built as rental properties for the widow Maria Keary in 1887.
Andrew Boyd, founder and executive director of Westcoast Genesis Society, which owns the buildings, and Eric Pattison, of Pattison Architecture, accepted the Award of Honour at the ceremony at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts on Oct. 19.
The awards were presented during Heritage B.C.'s annual fall conference.
Pattison said it seems that when complex projects are complete, recognition seems to follow.
The Maria Keary Cottage is no stranger to awards, having already won Royal City Builders' awards and Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver's awards.
River winners
Fraser Surrey Docks is the latest inductee into the Fraser River Hall of Fame.
Each year, the Fraser River Discovery Centre Society recognizes the significant achievements and contributions made by families, individuals, businesses and organizations to the Fraser River with an induction into the Fraser River Hall of Fame. Fraser Surrey Docks, which started as a small river port 50 years ago, is now the largest multi-purpose terminal of its kind on the west coast of North America.
"We're honoured to be selected as this year's inductee into the Fraser River Hall of Fame. Over the past 50 years, we have worked hard to build an efficient and reliable deep-sea cargo terminal on the Fraser River," said Fraser Surrey Docks president and CEO Jeff Scott in a press release. "In partnership with labour, customers and stakeholders, we have been successful in expanding our facility and creating a strong reputation for exceptional service. In collaboration with Port Metro Vancouver, the Fraser River has become an integral part of the Asia-Pacific Gateway.
We're proud of our involvement in the community, and for being such a vital link to the success of the Fraser River."
To celebrate the induction of Fraser Surrey Docks, the Fraser River Discovery Centre Society is hosting The Fraser River Hall of Fame Breakfast on Friday, Nov. 16 in the Upper Galleries of the Discovery Centre overlooking the mighty Fraser. For further details and ticket information, visit the Fraser River Discovery Centre's website at www. fraserriverdiscovery.org or to purchase tickets call 604-521-8401 or email info@fraserriverdiscovery. org.
"The nominations in support of Fraser Surrey Docks clearly praised the spirit of entrepreneurship, innovation and partnership of the company over the past 50 years," said Catherine Ouellet-Martin, executive director of Discovery Centre. "These qualities are the hallmarks of successful businesses on the Fraser and that of all inductees in the Fraser River Hall of Fame."
The Fraser River Discovery Centre Society operates the Fraser River Discovery Centre, which seeks to connect communities in discovery and celebration of the Fraser through interactive exhibits and engaging programming.
The centre is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission to the exhibit galleries is by donation.
