It's an annual event that draws thousands to the Quayside boardwalk every summer while encouraging residents to recycle their once-treasured goods.
The Quayside Boardwalk Festival and Sale is being held on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The sixth annual festival is already shaping up to be the largest on record, with more than 150 vendors set to sell their goods at the event, festival organizer James Crosty told The Record.
Last year's event brought almost 10,000 people to the city's waterfront neighbourhood to enjoy the festival, Crosty said. The festival includes a garage sale, vendors - including produce from a farmers' market - entertainment, pet centres and a kids' zone.
The Knots and Legal Limit are slated to play music at the festival.
The event is popular because there are so many surprise finds at the sale, Crosty said.
"You know those stories that people (sell) a painting that's a Picasso, and they didn't know they had it in the garage? You never know," he says with a laugh. "A lot of condo (owners), we collect stuff, and you've got to get rid of it. It's fun, in that respect, and then having the (River) market open this year is going to be fabulous because there will be great food and there will be great entertainment."
The event takes place rain or shine along the Quayside boardwalk stretching from the office tower all the way to the rail bridge and Quayside Park.
The festival includes a raffle with proceeds going to support the Royal City Music Theatre Society. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable item for the food bank.
The annual event is hosted by the Quayside Community Board, which is made up of one delegate and one alternate from all 17 residential buildings around Quayside. The group represents just under 2,000 units and an estimated 4,500 individuals.
