The New Westminster school district received the occupancy permit for Qayqayt Elementary School Friday.
Superintendent John Gaiptman is optimistic the labour dispute will be settled soon so students from John Robson can get into their new building on Merivale Street.
"Both sides are now working with Vince Ready and Vince is actively involved, he's no longer monitoring the situation," Gaiptman said. "I'm optimistic both sides have realized this has gone long enough."
According to the president of the New Westminster Teachers' Union, should a deal be reached, a few extra days should be given so teachers can set up shop.
"These guys haven't been in their classrooms since June 15th. Everything's still in boxes," Grant Osborne said. "They haven't had a chance to go in there and move in. Will they be ready by September 2nd? I mean if they announce Monday night there's a deal, it'll be interesting."
There are still some areas around Qayqayt elementary that have to be developed, specifically the Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC), home of the community daycare.
"That area is blocked off and there are people working there, reminding everyone they shouldn't be there," Gaiptman said. Even though the NLC is slated to open sometime in January, construction is scheduled to wrap up well before then.
Gaiptman has issued a letter to parents, stating he's unsure when the dispute will be over but for everyone to listen to media reports or visit www.sd40.bc.ca for updates.
