A power outage isn't an unusual occurrence in many places, but it can get folks talking in the Royal City.

Portions of uptown New Westminster were without power Sunday afternoon.

"One of our circuit breakers kicked out at the Royal substation down on 10th Street," said Rod Carle, general manager of the city's electrical utility. "The cause was a branch had come down on one of the feeders on Queens Avenue due to the high winds."

Employees cleaned up the branch and restored power, which was out for almost an hour-and-a-half.

"We don't experience a lot of issues," Carle said. "Every once in a while we do."

One area resident told The Record that it was only the second time her power has gone out in 17 years.

The last time it went out was several years ago when a squirrel ran into a transformer. According to Carle, 1,400 New Westminster residents were affected by the power outage.
