Police are warning construction crews in the area after officers interrupted a possible attempted theft at a worksite on Carnarvon Street.
The call came in shortly after 2 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8. Officers were called to the Carnarvon Street site after someone spotted a man jumping the fence into the site, according to a press release from the New Westminster Police Department.
When officers arrived, the thought they heard movement coming from inside the property. The suspect tried to exit the site, but police were waiting outside, the release noted.
The man was taken into custody without incident. No charges have been laid at this time.
“Construction sites can be easy targets for theft,” said acting Sgt. Jeff Scott, spokesperson for the police department. “If you must leave tools on site, we suggest locking them up and investing in cameras, alarms, or the services of a security company.”
Scott also suggested taking the time to conduct a thorough inventory of the equipment and tools on site. This includes photographing all items, recording serial numbers and the makes, models and years of all equipment.
“This can help our investigations,” he added.
