Portion of downtown New West park to close as overpass work begins

A portion of Westminster Pier Park will be closed to the public starting this Friday. But the good news is that it’s closing because extensive work is happening for the much-needed Sixth Street overpass.

A portion of Westminster Pier Park will be closed to the public starting this Friday.

But the good news is that it’s closing because extensive work is happening for the much-needed Sixth Street overpass.

On Friday, March 8, the City of New Westminster in partnership with Bosa Developments, will be starting construction of a fully accessible overpass at Sixth Street.

“The new overpass will extend from the Sixth Street entrance of Westminster Pier Park to the downtown parkade to the west entrance of the park; it will include both stairs and an accessible ramp for pedestrians and cyclists to and from the park,” said a posting on the city’s website.

“Starting on Friday, March 8th, the portion of the park highlighted in yellow will be closed to the public; however, all other areas of the park will remain open. Following construction of the overpass, stairs and ramp, we will be constructing a new and enhanced adventure playground.”

The posting includes a rendering (pictured above) of what the adventure playground and walkway will look like. The walkway promises to have incredible views of the Fraser River.
