Update: Two dead in crash on Burnaby-New West border, police watchdog investigating

Metro Vancouver Transit Police say one of its officers had tried to stop a car that allegedly 'fled at a high rate of speed' and then slammed into another vehicle at 10th Avenue and Sixth Street. Both people in that car have now died.

Two people are dead and two are in custody after a crash on the Burnaby-New Westminster border Tuesday night.

At around 11 p.m., a Metro Vancouver Transit Police officer had tried to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that allegedly took off “at a high rate of speed,” according to a transit police news release Wednesday.

The vehicle was located on fire a short time later at the intersection of 10th Avenue and Sixth Street after colliding with another vehicle, police said.

The two occupants in the other vehicle were taken to hospital but have since succumbed to their injuries, according to the release.

The driver and passenger from the suspect vehicle were arrested at the scene and face charges of prohibited driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and flight from police, police said.

The Independent Investigations Office, which investigates police-involved incidents that result in death or serious harm, has been called in.

Transit Police and Burnaby RCMP’s serious crimes unit are continuing the investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or might have dashcam footage of it is asked to contact Metro Vancouver Transit Police at 604-515-8300.
