With the winter months fast approaching, the New Westminster police and ICBC hope to educate pedestrians on the role they can play in road safety.

Pedestrians are once again being reminded to take extra care while out walking after a woman was hit by a car in New Westminster.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 800 block of McBride Boulevard on Monday, Nov. 7. Police said the woman, a New Westminster woman in her early 80s, was crossing the street mid-block when she was hit by a driver who was unable to stop in time to avoid her, according to a press release from police.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. No word on her condition at time.

Police are taking this opportunity to remind pedestrians to always use caution while crossing the street and to use marked crosswalks.

“Our Collision Analyst and Reconstruction Team attended and conducted an analysis of the collision scene and investigators have spoken with the driver and witnesses,” said acting Sgt. Jeff Scott, spokesperson for the New Westminster police.

It’s too early in the investigation to say what contributing factors led to the collision, according to police.
