Police seeking witnesses after man threatened with conducted energy weapon

New Westminster police are asking for witnesses after a man was threatened by a suspect wielding a conducted energy weapon.

The police department is appealing for additional witnesses to come forward after a man was assaulted and threatened with a conducted energy weapon in downtown New West.

Operators of a business near Begbie and Clarkson streets called the New Westminster Police Department about 10 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 15, after a man sough refuge at their place of business.

“This victim was followed by a suspect who made threats and brandished a conducted energy weapon that was making sparks,” said a NWPD news release. “The suspect then fled in the direction of Eighth Street. Police learned that the victim had been assaulted by the suspect moments earlier. The suspect is not known to the victim.”

The suspect is described as a Caucasian man in his mid-20s, with a slim build and standing approximately 5’6” tall. He had blonde, ear-length hair, tattoos on his neck, and was wearing a green jacket and brown cargo pants.

“This attack appears to have been completely unprovoked,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Justine Thom. “We are particularly interested in speaking to people who saw the suspect immediately before or after the alleged assault, or overheard any interaction the suspect had with the victim.”
