New Westminster police are investigating a Dec. 13 assault at a postal outlet in a downtown drug store.

A woman is alleged to have assaulted staff at a downtown store and then kicked and bit at police officers who responded to the clerk’s screams.

The New Westminster Police Department reports that an officer who was in the area working on an unrelated police investigation heard screaming inside a drug store near the New Westminster SkyTrain station bus loop. The officer located a suspect, who was yelling at staff, near the Canada Post counter in the Shoppers Drug Mart store at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13,.

“The suspect did not comply with instructions from officers and proceeded to kick and bite police,” said the press release. “A (store) staff member shared that they had been assaulted prior to police attending the scene.”

Officers transported the suspect to the cells at the New Westminster police station.

“Customer service staff deserve a safe working environment,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Justine Thom said in a news release. “If anyone is making you feel unsafe, know that you can call 911 and an officer will be there right away.”

According to the police department, the investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed this incident and has not yet spoken to police about what they saw is asked to call 604-525-5411 and reference file 22-18842.
