The details of an investigation that saw officers combing Hume Park in November remain a mystery – at least to the public.

New Westminster police were spotted in the east end park on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 29. Residents living in the area also reported seeing several cop cars as well as police tape cordoning off a portion of the park.

Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott, spokesperson for the New Westminster Police Department, confirmed officers were in the park that night and into the early hours of Nov. 30 as part of an ongoing major crime unit investigation.

Neither the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team nor the Coroners Service have been involved, Scott said at the time.

Since then, no details regarding the nature of the investigation have been released.

The Record contacted the police department in mid-December to inquire further and was told it was an isolated incident.

“There is no public safety concern,” Scott wrote in an email. “Unfortunately, I am not able to elaborate at this time.”

Last week, the Record sent a second request for information about the incident but was again told no information could be released at this time.

Scott is waiting to hear back from the department’s major crime unit regarding any developments in the case at which point he said he’ll provide more details.
