Two New Westminster police officers helped paramedics save the life of a 65-year-old on April 14.

On that Saturday night, a New Westminster police officer, along with a female recruit, came upon an ambulance parked on the side of the road in the 200 block of Columbia Street. The ambulance's emergency lights were flashing and the paramedics were trying to use a defibrillator on a 65-year-old woman.

The patient went into cardiac arrest and the paramedics were both required to provide medical assistance, leaving no one to drive the ambulance.

The senior officer on the scene jumped in to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and chest compressions on the woman while a paramedic drove to Royal Columbian Hospital. The recruit followed in the police cruiser.

The woman is currently recovering at Royal Columbian.
