Charges have been approved for the 29-year-old suspect arrested by New Westminster police in Burnaby after he allegedly stole a truck in Burnaby on Monday.

As The Record reported earlier this week, New Westminster police spotted a GMC Jimmy truck around 11:10 a.m. on July 16 in the 400-block of Columbia St. The truck had been reported stolen in Burnaby the day before, according to a press release.

The patrol officer called for assistance from the street crime unit, who arrived in plainclothes to monitor the vehicle while they waited for the driver to come back. Air 1 was also dispatched to keep an eye on the truck, according to the release.

When the driver came back to the truck, which was occupied by a female passenger, the couple drove away. They made their way to Burnaby where the driver eventually stopped and parked the car in the 7400-block of Southwynde Ave.

It was then that officers, who had been following the truck, made their move and arrested the couple and brought them back to New Westminster

Surrey resident Jesse Michael Sokol has been charged with theft under $5,000; possession of stolen property under $5,000; and driving while prohibited. He will remain in custody until his next court date on July 24 in New Westminster.
