The east side of New Westminster has seen a rash of break-ins and attempted break-ins to sheds and buildings located at the rear of homes in the past week.

That's the word from Sgt. Diana McDaniel of the New Westminster Police Department.

"There have been 12 in the last week," said McDaniel of the area bounded by Eighth and 10th avenues and Cherry and Holmes streets.

She said bolt cutters and pry tools have been used to force open sheds.

"The New Westminster Police Department would like to urge the public to remain vigilant and on the lookout for any suspicious behavior, in particular, people that do not belong or appear to be casing out residences from back alleys," McDaniel said in a press release.

The police are asking that the public call 604-525-5411 to report any suspicious activity in the area.

Homes on the Burnaby side of 10th Avenue have also been affected by these break-ins, but McDaniel did not have exact figures on those incidents.
