New Westminster police had a busy weekend, in most part thanks to the stormy weather.

The weekend kicked off early Saturday morning with an investigation into a collision between a passenger vehicle and a tow truck.

At about 12:50 a.m. on Aug. 29, officers were called to the intersection of McBride Boulevard and Eighth Avenue following a report of a car crash. A passenger vehicle and a flatbed tow truck had collided in the intersection, effectively closing the area off to other drivers, according to a media release from the New Westminster Police Department.

“At this point it’s unclear if anybody went through a red light or anything like that, so that’s still under investigation,” Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott, spokesperson for the police department, told the Record.

Luckily, no one was badly injured, Scott added.

“There’s no charges yet, but the file is still under investigation,” he said.

Officers spent much of the rest of the weekend directing traffic so that crews with the City of New Westminster could get the streets cleaned up.

Traffic was especially messy on Royal Avenue on Saturday afternoon. A downed tree near the on-ramp to the Pattullo Bridge had traffic at a standstill. Officers were called to the scene to help direct traffic.

“It was busy with the storms,” Scott said. “(We were) managing traffic throughout the city to make sure people were able to move through the city safely with some trees down and power outages.”

Other than that, officers were busy handling an increase in calls, but nothing too severe, Scott added.
