New Westminster police are combing through evidence collected from the scene of a deadly car accident last Friday.
As previously reported by The Record, officers were called to the 1600 block of Stewardson Way after a vehicle crossed the centre line and collided head on with an oncoming semi truck travelling eastbound.
The driver of the vehicle, 52-year-old Norman Wilding of New Westminster, suffered critical injuries and was taken to hospital where he later died.
Investigators with the department’s collision analysis reconstruction team spent 12 hours at the scene, collecting evidence in order to determine what caused the vehicle to cross over centre line, Sgt. Diana McDaniel, spokesperson for the New Westminster Police Department said.
“They’re downloading all of the information from the vehicles, which gives them information about (their) mechanical state and a variety of things like speed,” she said.
Investigators are also waiting for mechanic reports on what condition the vehicle and semi truck were operating under prior to the accident, McDaniel added.
“It’s just what happened prior to (the collision) that they’re investigating and sorting out,” she added.
This includes investigating whether or not there’s evidence to suggest if the driver was using a handheld device at the time of the crash or if some type of medical crisis occurred.
“It will be some time in order to go through everything,” McDaniel added. “It’s just such a lengthy and detailed investigation that they end up doing.”
Anyone with information on the collision is asked to contact Sgt. Terry Dhut at 604-529-2496.
