Poetry, mystery at Lit Fest New West

Mark your calendars for the second annual Lit Fest New West, sponsored by the Arts Council, Douglas College and the New Westminster Public Library.

Mark your calendars for the second annual Lit Fest New West, sponsored by the Arts Council, Douglas College and the New Westminster Public Library.

This year, Lit Fest has expanded to three days, with a slam poetry competition, a mystery evening and an all-day event with workshops and a showcase.

Lit Fest begins on Thursday, April 12 with the Dead Poets Slam at Heritage Grill, hosted by Slam Central.

Instead of reading or reciting original work, poets will read from a dead poet's work and are welcome to dress in costume. Performances are judged by five randomly selected members of the audience , and the $5 admission goes towards the prizes.

The top three winners on Thursday will slam off on Saturday evening, April 14, at Douglas College to close out the Lit Fest Showcase. The doors open at 7: 15 p.m., with the slam beginning at 8 p.m.

On Friday, April 13, beware! It's A Night of Mystery at the Library from 6: 30 to 8: 30 p.m.

Local mystery authors Colleen Cross, Don Hauka and Elizabeth Elwood will thrill with readings from their mystery stories and will clue you in on their mysterious writing secrets.

An opening reception for Lit Fest will follow, as well as a chance to meet the authors, buy books and have them signed.

The main event for Lit Fest is on Saturday, April 14 at Douglas College. Beginning at 9 a.m., there will be a marketplace with publishers, authors, booksellers, open mic author readings and a chance to have your prose or poetry critiqued.

Workshops will focus on writing and publishing and will include a panel on e-publishing and a workshop how to borrow eBooks from the library.

The day will end with the Lit Fest showcase in the evening from 7 to 9: 30 p.m. The entertainment will feature authors, music, theatre and dance, all highlighting the written word.
