There's no shortage of events to get you out-and-about in the Royal City on this first full weekend of fall. We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend.

Here are our suggestions for the Sept. 28 to 30 weekend:

1 Celebrate the Fraser River at RiverFest, which is a celebration of the Mighty River. A merger of the FraserFest and Artists on the River festivals, RiverFest includes live music and entertainment, art exhibits, interactive activities from conservation organizations and community groups, the Lucille Johnstone workboat parade (Saturday between 3: 30 and 4 p.m.) and harbour tours. The fun gets underway with entertainment on the main stage at on Friday, Sept. 28 from 6 to 9 p.m., and the official opening takes place at 7 p.m. at a stage near Fraser River Discovery Centre.

A full day of events will take place on the waterfront on Saturday, Sept. 29. For more on the topnotch entertainment lineup, visit www.hyack.ca.

2 Scavenge around the city and support Westminster House, a recovery program for women. Westminster House is holding its first ever Community Day event on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Hyack Square.

The event includes a scavenger hunt around the city, food-eating contests, face painting, a colouring contest, skipping and more.

Registration for the scavenger hunt starts at 10 a.m. and the hunt gets underway at 11 a.m. For more information, visit www.westminsterhouse. ca.

3 Light up the night at the first Lantern Festival in the Boro. The event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Port Royal Park, which is at the east end of Ewen Avenue.

The festival includes assembly of LED-powered lanterns, picture drawing using sparklers, a scavenger hunt and live musical entertainment. For more information, call the Queensborough Community Centre at 604-525-7388.

4 Find some bargains at New Westminster Family Place's garage sale fundraiser. The free event includes a sale of kids clothes and toys, household items and other groceries. All funds raised will support New Westminster Family Place, a non-profit society that provides a drop-in and resource programs for local families with children up to age five. The garage sale takes place on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 93 Sixth St. For more information, call 604-520-3666.

5 Experience the splendors of fall in the newest exhibit at the Van Dop Gallery, which features a solo exhibition by Jim Walsh called Colours of the Season. You can meet the New Westminster artist at the Van Dop Gallery when the exhibition opens on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 1 to 5 p.m. The gallery is located at 420 Richmond St. For more information, email gallery@vandopgal lery.com or call 6045217887.

6 Support the Hyack Football program at its annual Tailgate Auction, a major fundraiser for Hyack Football. This year's event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the beautiful La Perla Ballroom (in River Market). Seating is limited but you may still be in luck. Contact Stephanie Musgrove at [email protected] or at 604-580-2730.
