Photos: Public Works Week open house – a fun day for students and staff

Students got a chance to check out some of the city's big machines at a recent open house

The City of New Westminster is hoping to showcase even more of its work in 2023.

As part of Public Works Week, the city invited some Grade 8 students from Fraser River Middle School to visit the works yard to check out some displays and see the type of public works provided by the city. Here's a look back at some of the photos taken by the Record at the open house.

“The interactive displays were engaging and educational and gave the students a chance to see the vital role that public works plays in their daily lives,” said Gabe Beliveau, the city’s manager of engineering operations. “These events allow staff a wonderful opportunity to showcase their work, our pride shines bright and we’re so happy to celebrate our team and industry.”

A proclamation from New Westminster city council stated the city’s facilities and services could not be provided without the dedicated efforts of public works professionals, who are responsible for and must plan, design, build, operate and maintain transportation, water supply, wastewater systems, solid waste collection, public buildings and other structures and facilities essential to serve citizens.

“Coming out of the pandemic we were excited to once again showcase and celebrate our hard working staff. This was especially important after a few difficult years where we worked non-stop through the pandemic,” Beliveau said in a post-event email to the Record. “We are already developing ideas to expand on the 2022 open house and Public Works Week concepts. We hope to reach as many stakeholders as we can in future years and to showcase even more of our working groups.”
