Pride and poetry: Poetry in the Park celebrates New West Pride

Poetry fans gathered in Queen’s Park Wednesday night for a special New West Pride event.

Poetry in the Park New West Pride featured readings by poets Jen Currin and David Ly. The Aug. 16 event is one of numerous events taking place during New Westminster’s 2023 Pride Week.

Currin's latest poetry collection Trinity Street, was recently released. Her book Hider/Seeker: Stories won a Canadian Independent Book Award, was a finalist for a ReLit Award, and was named a 2018 Globe and Mail Best Book.

Ly is the author of Mythical Man (2020), which was shortlisted for the 2021 ReLit Poetry Award, and Dream of Me as Water (2022). He’s also the co-editor (with Daniel Zomparelli) of Queer Little Nightmares: An Anthology of Monstrous Fiction and Poetry.

Catherine Lewis, a bisexual Chinese Canadian writer based in Vancouver, hosted the event. Lewis’s debut chapbook Zipless is a finalist for two Bisexual Book Awards.

Pride Week continues with numerous events in the coming days, including the street festival on Saturday, Aug. 19.
