Photos: New Westminster students mark No Stone Left Alone

About 400 students from four elementary schools turned out at Fraser Cemetery in the rain for a poppy-laying ceremony Friday morning.

About 400 students from four New Westminster elementary schools gathered in the rain at Fraser Cemetery Friday morning to remember fallen veterans.

Students from Skwo:wech, Herbert Spencer and F.W. Howay schools took part in the sixth annual No Stone Left Alone ceremony, laying poppies on the graves of fallen soldiers in the military section of the Richmond Street cemetery. Also taking part for the first time this year was Urban Academy, which sent a contingent of 40 students for the event.

They were joined by representatives from the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps 2316,  Hyack Festival Youth Ambassadors and representatives from various community groups, accompanied by Canadian Armed Forces members of the Royal Westminster Regiment and Royal Canadian Legion.

No Stone Left Alone is an educational initiative involving youth across Canada with the simple act of placing a poppy on military headstones to honour and recognize the sacrifices that Canadian military men and women made while serving Canada, a press release notes.

Reporter-photographer Cornelia Naylor turned out to take photos of the Nov. 4, 2022 event. Here's some of what she found.
