The New Westminster Police Department had a little April Fools fun stopping motorists in a local school zone and rewarding them for almost obeying the speed limit.
Officers were set up with radar guns on Sixth Avenue across from Hebert Spencer Elementary School Friday.
When they clocked drivers going just a few kilometres per hour over the 30 km/h speed limit, they pulled them over.
The ensuing frowns turned to smiles when the officers pointed out it was April 1 and then handed them a $10 Starbucks gift card for keeping their speed down in the school zone.
“You just made my day,” one driver told Sgt. Greg Smith.
The stops lasted less than a minute, according to NWPD communications coordinator Hailey Finnigan, and the mood of the interactions lightened up pretty quickly once officers delivered the April Fools punchline and gift card.
