Watch for banners during this afternoon's commute.

Rush-hour commuters through New Westminster this afternoon are being greeted by a climate protest.

A small group of activists with the Climate Convergence group took to the pedestrian overpass over Stewardson Way, near 22nd Street SkyTrain station, to drop banners carrying a number of anti-pipeline-expansion messages.

The volunteers were hoping to build on the momentum from the Sept. 15 Global Climate Strike, which saw an estimated 5,000 people hit the streets of Vancouver.

“Today Climate Convergence is out in the streets again, calling on people to join us and build on the momentum to stop the climate destroying Trans Mountain expansion (TMX) and Coastal GasLink (CGL) pipelines once and for all,” explained Alison Bodine, central organizer with Climate Convergence, in a press release.

Active construction on the TMX project is ongoing in Burnaby and Coquitlam.

Bodine noted the group is also standing with the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs to oppose the Coastal Gas Link project.

Organizers intend to be on site at the Stewardson Way overpass until 6 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 27).
