New Westminster police are trying to identify a young South Asian man they believe may be able to fill in the blanks in connection to a crime that happened last December.

The man’s photo was taken from surveillance footage on a SkyTrain, but police say the crime didn’t happen on transit. The police department would not provide any details on the incident but confirmed investigators wanted to speak with the unknown man about an offence that took place in the city on Dec. 21, 2015, said acting Sgt. Jeff Scott, spokesperson for the department.

“We don’t really know what his part in it is at this point, as so much as he’s a person of interest with respect to an ongoing investigation,” he told the Record.

Police believe the man in question “befriended” another man while on the SkyTrain. Investigators have spoken with the second man, but Scott wouldn’t go into detail about what was discussed.

The public, in the meantime, should not be concerned, Scott urged, adding investigators just need to identify the man so they can contact him.

“We’re just working on trying to identify who he is, and now that we’re into May, we thought we needed to put his picture out because other avenues haven’t been successful in figuring out his identity,” Scott said.

More information will be released once investigators identify and speak with the person of interest, he added.

Anyone with information on the man or who may be able to identify him is asked to contact Const. Oliveira at 604-525-5411.
