While residents were checking out the brand new Anvil Centre, police were busy investigating reports of a man carrying a handgun in uptown.

New Westminster police received a call shortly before noon on Sept. 14 that a witness had seen a man carrying a revolver in the waist band of his pants, enter a residence in the 900 block of Fifth Avenue.

Nearly all patrol officers on-duty at the time were called out to secure the area as investigators searched for the man, according to Sgt. Diana McDaniel. For a couple hours, Fifth Avenue between Ninth and 10th Street was closed as police continued their search.

Eventually the man in question was located and police determined that what the witness had thought was a revolver was in fact a pellet gun.

“(The pellet gun) was seized in the interest of public safety. Two other airsoft rifles were also seized,” McDaniel wrote in an email to The Record.

The investigation is ongoing, and there have not been any charges submitted at this time, McDaniel added.
