A New Westminster resident is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue last night.
The 25-year-old woman suffered major skull fractures when she was hit by an oncoming vehicle around 10: 30 p.m. Monday night.
Sgt. Diana McDaniel said heavy rain and the artificial lighting from the streetlights were a factor in the accident.
Speed was not a factor as the driver may have been making a turn at the time of the accident, according to McDaniel.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and has cooperated with investigators.
Three members of the New Westminster Police Department's collision analysis and reconstruction team attended the scene.
McDaniel said she wants to remind residents of the importance of pedestrian safety, especially in poor weather conditions.
"Always wear bright clothing, don't have headphones on, be aware of your surroundings and always cross at a crosswalk," she said.
