Traffic changes are coming to New West as part of the Pattullo Bridge replacement project.

Traffic pattern changes are coming to Royal Avenue as part of the Pattullo Bridge replacement project.

Crews will begin the next stage of work for the Royal Avenue overpass rehabilitation on Friday, Dec. 16 – prompting traffic pattern changes that will last for about four to five months. As part of the upcoming work, crews will create a work zone in the middle of Royal Avenue, between Dufferin Street and McBride Boulevard.

“Royal Avenue will be reduced to three lanes (two westbound and one eastbound) for approximately four to five months,” said a notice from team working on the project. “The existing sidewalk on the Royal Avenue overpass will be closed. A temporary pedestrian and cyclist bridge has been installed to maintain access.”

According to the notice, the following turning restrictions will be implemented:

* Left turns will not be permitted from the southbound off-ramp onto Royal Avenue eastbound for approximately eight to 12 weeks. Detour signage will be provided.

* Access to Bushby Street will be right-in, right-out. All turn movements to and from Leopold Place will be maintained.

“Lane reductions and turning restrictions will be implemented on Royal Avenue,” said the notice. “Detours will direct traffic while the left-turn restriction from the Bridge Connector southbound off-ramp is in effect. When required, traffic control personnel will be on site to direct traffic, pedestrians and cyclists. All traffic pattern changes will be well-signed.”

The project team noted that drivers may experience temporary delays resulting from the detours.

The notice stated that work will take place Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some nighttime work will be required when traffic volumes are low.

“Noise from construction equipment can be expected,” said the notice. “We appreciate your patience while this work is underway.”

Set to open in 2024, the new $1.377-billion crossing between New West and Surrey will replace the Pattullo Bridge, which was built in 1937.
