Pattullo Bridge update: Overnight on-ramp closures in New West

Expect traffic changes in New Westminster this week as work on Pattullo Bridge replacement progresses

Overnight traffic changes will impact motorists trying to access the Pattullo Bridge in the coming days.

More traffic change are taking place in New West – starting tonight – as part of the Pattullo Bridge replacement project.

Starting Oct. 5, the Royal Avenue on-ramp will be closed nightly between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for approximately two weeks. The closure of the on-ramp is required so Fraser Crossing Partners can conduct underground drainage work on the on-ramp.

“Traffic will be directed to the Columbia Street loop-ramp for accessing the Pattullo Bridge,” said a notice from the project team. “When required, traffic control personnel will be on site to direct traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists. All traffic pattern changes will be well-signed.”

According to the notice, the on-ramp closure is being scheduled to occur overnight to minimize traffic impacts. This work is not anticipated to be noisy.

Last week, underground drainage work resulted in some traffic changes on Royal Avenue near the bridge.

Earlier this year, representatives from the Pattullo Bridge replacement project team provided city council with an update on the project. They told council that road closures would be coming to Front Street, Columbia Street and Royal Avenue in the spring, summer and fall of 2023 – but the works would be staged in such a way that two of those roads would remain open at all times.

The new $1.377-billion bridge is expected to open in 2024.
