New West-bound motorists will be detoured if they're trying to access the Pattullo Bridge this weekend.

If you’re planning to do some nighttime travel between the north and south sides of the Fraser River this weekend, you may need to take a different route.

The Pattullo Bridge replacement project team has announced an overnight closure is planned for the northbound lanes on the Pattullo Bridge, so detours will be required.

“Construction of the new bridge deck is ongoing in Surrey, with crews lifting steel girders between the main bridge and off-ramp foundations just east of the existing Pattullo Bridge,” said a notice about the work. “On May 17, Fraser Crossing Partners will require an overnight closure of the Pattullo Bridge in the northbound direction due to the proximity of the girder installation equipment to the existing bridge in Surrey.”

The closure of the northbound lane (travelling from Surrey to New Westminster) is scheduled to take place from 9 p.m. on Friday, May 17 to 5 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. If required, an additional overnight closure will take place from 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 18 until 5 a.m. on Sunday, May 19.

“Drivers and transit users may experience longer- than-normal travel times due to the northbound lane closures,” said the notice. “Nearby residents may hear some noise associated with overnight work activities.”

TransLink’s regular single-lane traffic for nighttime travel on the Pattullo Bridge remains in effect for southbound traffic (drivers travelling from New Westminster to Surrey).

Motorists who would normally use the Pattullo Bridge to get from Surrey to New Westminster can take the Port Mann or Alex Fraser bridges during the northbound lane closures.

Northbound N19 NightBus trips will be rerouted over the Queensborough and Alex Fraser bridges, and affected customers should plan for an additional 30 minutes of travel time.

Emergency vehicle access, and access for pedestrians and cyclists, will be maintained.
