Park plan needed

Councillor says city may be losing group events

Coun. Bill Harper believes organizations should be able to book events at Westminster Pier Park.

Harper has raised concerns that groups inquiring about holding festivals at the new waterfront park have been told by the city that they can't book the park at this time because no guidelines are in place. He'd like the city to take action so groups, such as the arts council, are able to plan festivals at the park.

Q'boro meeting

New Westminster city council will be taking its show on the road.

Council has approved its meeting schedule for 2013, which includes one meeting in Queensborough. Coun. Jonathan Cote said the meeting will be held next year in the renovated Queensborough Community Centre.

"We had planned a meeting there a few years ago, but it got cancelled. I think it will be a great way to invite the community into the new centre and bring one of our meetings to a neighbourhood that can sometime feel a bit isolated," he said.

Botanical garden

Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine will be creating a demonstration botanical garden at Westminster Pier Park.

City council has approved an agreement between the City of New Westminster and Boucher Institute for the use of a portion of the park, where it will create and operate a demonstration botanical garden. The site, which is about 95 square metres in size and located near the Lytton Square timber frame structure, will be operated by the institute's students as part of their professional training.

"The proposed botanical garden is a positive example of how the city can partner with the community and local organizations for the social, environmental and financial benefit of all," said a staff report. "
