Pair wine with doughnuts at this New West winery

For those who dream of spending the weekend biting into soft doughnuts, and sipping glasses of wine — New Westminster’s Pacific Breeze Winery might just have the ideal event for you this Saturday.

Here’s an idea that challenges your coffee and doughnut routine — how about pairing the glazed delights with wine instead of caffeine?

Pacific Breeze Winery is hosting a wine and doughnut event this Saturday, Sept. 24, where customers can order a glass, flight or bottle of wine (or even a wine slushie), and complement it with a pillowy YUM Gourmet Donuts.

While most wine enthusiasts might know that red wine goes with red meat, and white wine goes with fish, the art of pairing wine and doughnuts might be new. For those who are stumped by the combo, Devon Hamilton, the winemaker at Pacific Breeze Winery, assured, “We have pairing suggestions for each doughnut!”

As per Hamilton, “Doughnut and wine pairing isn’t unheard of but it’s certainly not common.”

The winery tested the waters in July by hosting a day of doughnuts and wine in New West.

“We sold out! People loved the idea of a glass of wine with a doughnut.”

Now, after a gap of over two months, the winery is gearing up to have the two worlds — of wine and doughnuts — collide again.

“We like to try and match characteristics in the wines to shared characteristics in the doughnuts!” said Hamilton.

“For example, we paired a strawberry cheesecake doughnut with our rosé, as our rosé has a palate reminiscent of strawberry. When it comes to pairing white wines, we traditionally look for citrus or light fruit flavours to complement — so, YUM’s lemon meringue-filled doughnut went perfectly with our Gewürztraminer.”

As far as the reds go, a sinful chocolate iced doughnut pairs best, said Hamilton, adding what most might strongly agree with — that “chocolate and red wine just go so well together!”

Pacific Breeze Winery is located at 320 Stewardson Way.
