Summer may be winding down for those who will soon be heading back to school, but there's no shortage
of events to keep you on the go in New Westminster this weekend.
We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. This weekend's recommendations include festivals, sales, and some entertainment offerings.
1 Bust a gut when the well-known comedy duo Double Exposure (Bob Robertson and Linda Cullen) appears at the Columbia Theatre on Friday, Aug. 17 at 8 p.m.
Robertson and Cullen, stars of a long-running CBC Radio program and a CTV television series, will bring a night of political satire to the city they now call home.
Tickets, which are $15 in advance or $20 at the door, are available at www.thecolumbia.ca or at 604-522-4500.
2 Prove you "ain't afraid of no ghosts" and enjoy Ghostbusters on a big screen in Queen's Park. The City of New Westminster and G&F Financial have teamed up for an outdoor movies series this summer.
Bring your own blanket or lawn chairs, or sit in the stands at Queen's Park Stadium, for Ghostbusters, which will be shown on Friday, Aug. 17 at 8: 30 p.m. Popcorn and a cash concession are available.
3 Show your pride at New West Pride 2012, which features a number of events over the weekend. Pride Week kicked off on Thursday, but there's lots of fun in store this weekend, including Hills and Heels fundraiser starting on Columbia Street at noon on Saturday, Aug. 18 and ending up at city hall, where a proclamation will be read.
Everyone is invited to the Festival in the Park, which takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. at Tipperary Park and features performances by Kate Reid, Sugar Beach, Neptune at Night, Kiki Lawhore and others. Pride Week also includes a dance on Friday, Aug. 17, a prepride brunch on Saturday, Aug. 18 and a wrap-up pride brunch on Sunday, Aug. 19.
Full details and ticket information can be found at www.newwestpride. com or events@newwest pride.com.
4 Find some treasures at the sixth annual Quayside Boardwalk Festival and Sale, which takes place on the Quayside boardwalk on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The festival expects to attract more than 150 vendors and thousands of bargain hunters.
In addition to the garage sale, the event also includes entertainment by The Knots and Legal Limit, pet centres and a kids' zone. More information about the event, which is hosted by the Quayside Community Board, can be found at www.quayside board.com.
5 Get some amazing deals on sports gear - and support local kids in their sporting endeavours.
KidSport New Westminster is holding a used equipment sale on Sunday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Glenbrook Middle School, 701 Park Cres. KidSports will be selling all sorts of sports gear so it can raise funds to provide financial support to children who may face financial barriers that prevent them from otherwise playing organized sports.
6 Enjoy a Summer Jam BBQ at the Boro All Wheel Park on Sunday, Aug. 19 from 12 to 3 p.m.
The event, which takes place at 920 Ewen Ave. in Queensborough, features live music, a barbecue fundraiser, pro riders and free giveaways.
