New Westminster's Team Starlight raises funds and scales buildings for charity

Larry Ho, manager of New Westminster's Starlight Casino, raised some serious funds, donned his best "Captain Bacon" superhero duds and rappelled 20 storeys down the side of a Vancouver skyscraper, all in the name of charity.

Ho, along with Team Starlight teammate Jeffrey Price, and New Westminster resident Janice Bannister, took part in the Easter Seals Drop Zone event, Sept 13. To enter, participants had to raise at least $1,500 for Easter Seals House and Easter Seals Camps for children with disabilities.

Ho said he learned about the event while having lunch with an employee at the casino.

"One of my security officers had participated with this foundation a few years ago. I thought this would be a great opportunity for our property to help out children with disabilities in B.C. Starlight was one of the top donors of the 2011 event and we look forward to providing continued support to the foundation," he said in an email.

Ho also managed to be the top individual fundraiser for the event, bringing in $4,500.88.

But stepping out over the edge and looking 61 metres down at West Hastings Street below didn't exactly come easy.

"I definitely had second, third, and fourth thoughts prior to rappelling down the building," he said. "I had quite a bit of adrenaline pumping through me before and after and the descent. Terrified of heights, but conquered it that day."

As for why he chose Captain Bacon as his superhero alter ego, well, it turns out he just likes bacon.

"I've been a fan of bacon for quite some time. I have everything from a bacon board game to bacon t shirts," Ho said.
