Two men were arrested Monday following a police takedown in New Westminster.

The province's integrated gang task force made the arrest in the parking lot of McBride Plaza around 11:30 a.m.

Police say they followed the men to New Westminster after a reported crime in the 7200-block of Fairfield Place in Delta.

"Shortly after 10 a.m., members of the uniformed gang task force were patrolling Delta-Surrey when they responded to a break-and-enter," said task force Sgt. Shinder Kirk.

"As a result of responding, two males were arrested in New Westminster and taken into custody. At this point, the investigation is ongoing."

Kirk said it is too soon to say whether the men are gang members or are known to police. The gang unit will respond to any call for service if they are nearby, Kirk said.

"We're police officers first and foremost regardless of whether our specific task is gangs. We also do patrol communities looking for gangsters obviously, but if there are other law enforcement-type calls, they will respond," he said.
