Lowe's Canada is taking steps to put its name on New Westminster's iconic festival.

The Hyack Festival Association has announced that Lowe's Canada will be the title sponsor of the New Westminster Hyack Festival, which takes place from May 18 to 27.

"The addition of Lowe's is a significant step in elevating the status of the nine-day festival," said Douglas Smith, Hyack's executive director. "Lowe's has such a family atmosphere with their staff and a great willingness to give back to the community. They are a great partner for a family-oriented festival like Hyack."

The 41st Hyack Festival includes the Hyack International Parade, which features a variety of floats, bands and parade entrants on Saturday, May 26. That's also the day the Hyack Festival Association will launch Uptown Live, a new street party in the uptown shopping district that will get underway at the conclusion of the parade.

"We have got quite a few things we are going to be announcing as we go along," Smith said.

In November 2011, Lowe's Canada opened its first British Columbia store in Queensborough. Lowe's, the second largest home improvement retailer in the world, now has 31 stores in B.C., Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

"Since opening our first store in 2007, Lowe's has invested well over $2 million in community relations initiatives," said Ramona Paul, manager of the Lowe's Queensborough. "As new members of the community, Lowe's is shrilled to be the title sponsor of the 41st annual Hyack Festival, an event that brings people of all ages and backgrounds together. We're excited to be serving the community and to be involved in a program so deeply rooted in the culture of New Westminster."
