New Westminster is leasing out a small space in the new community centre to a physiotherapy provider.

A physiotherapist will be setting up shop in təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre – becoming the first commercial lease space dedicated to active rehabilitation services in a public recreation facility in New West.

The City of New Westminster recently issued a “notice of disposition of land” regarding a lease with MacPherson and Zenone Physiotherapist Corporation. The notice states the lease is for the purpose of operating a comprehensive active rehabilitation, health and wellness treatment centre.

Collier Canada’s listing stated a leased space was available in təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre (TACC). It said the space is ideally suited for an active rehab and wellness centre to provide physiotherapy, massage, or chiropractic services.

“Don’t miss the opportunity to be a part of this state-of-the-art facility,” stated Colliers.

At an April 8 workshop, staff provided council with an update on various aspects of the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre. Stay tuned: the Record will be publishing several stories about different aspects of the project in the coming days.

At Monday night’s meeting, council authorized the mayor and council clerk to execute the lease agreement, subject to completion of the required public notification processes, for the provision of active rehabilitation services in TACC.

“New municipal aquatic and fitness facilities are trending to include purpose-built commercial rehabilitation spaces,” said the report. “These spaces support the overall health and wellness of the community. It is recognized that active rehabilitation operations generate revenue through both the direct proceeds arising form the lease agreement, and also through the subsequent sale of City Active Passes via rehabilitation services users continuing their wellness practices after treatment.”

Starting May 1, the city will lease out the 58-square-metre space (624 square feet) for 10 years, at a rate of $2,340 per month ($28,080 annually) for the first five years and $2,860 per month ($34,320) for years six through 10.

“Upon executive of the lease, the tenant will be able to commence the fit-out of the space within TACC,” said a staff report. “It is expected that this process may take up to three to four months, after which the business will commence operations.”
