The City of New Westminster has high hopes for the Wait for Me, Daddy memorial that's being planned.
A task force has been working on plans to create a public art feature in downtown New Westminster that's based on the famous Wait For Me, Daddy photograph taken by Province newspaper photographer Claud Detloff on Oct. 1, 1940. He captured the image of five-year-old Warren "Whitey" Bernard reaching out to his father, Jack, who was among the soldiers marching down Eighth Street in New Westminster.
"We are going to contact Canada Post about issuing a special stamp, and the (Royal Canadian) mint about issuing a special coin," said Acting Mayor Lorrie Williams, who has been championing the project. "You have to try."
Because the Wait for Me, Daddy photograph is the second most requested photograph in the national archives, city officials believe the project has national significance.
